Snowdrops by A D Miller

I read this December 2011
Why: Waterstone's bookclub chioce for February 2012
I first heard the tern snowdrops used in the sense of a dead body that lies buried in the snows, emerging only in the thaw, when I read Gorky Park, so I had expected this book to be a simlilar sort of detective thriller, but surprisingly (and a nice surprise ) it isn't It is a tale of love and betrayal, but definitely not chick lit. I loved the slow paced start and the rapid paced end and the zeitgeisty timely publication.. I loved the 'telling someone the whole truth' aspect of the narrattion and I think it worked perfectly in the first person as the reader definately should not knw what else is going on, the reader finds out along with the narrator.
And I love the term 'Wannabe Oligarchesses'

Bare Bones by Kate Reichs

I read this December 2011
I bought this in a charity shop as I caught my eye, as I wanted a relaxing read and I love to watch Bones on TV.

This is a temperance Brennan novel, the two TB's; Paper and TV, are not really alike very much, they do have the same sort of temperament, but they are different ages and family life isn't the same. I still very much enjoyed this book though. TB is a forensic anthropologist the story line is good with a good sub plot or two or three as well. I like the style of writing and just the thing for a quick, easy, spooky read on dark cold nights...some really interesting ways of writing/ending chapters making you want to go on reading.. I shall try to incorporate some of the techniques in my own writing.

7/10
Have you read this or any of the other Temperance Brennan novels? do you like Bones? Let me know what you think

Oath Breaker by Michelle Paver

I read this: December 2011
Why: because I read Dark Matter, saw this in a charity shop and thought I would like to read it.
This is a children's (teenagers) book and set in Mesolithic times. I really enjoyed it, it is book 5 in a set of 6, but it really did tsand alone as a novel. I did not feel like I should have read the others first. I liked the way the wolf called the hero Tall tailess and the female lead pack sister. Water was still wet or fast wet and fire was the bright that burns.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Hercule Poirot's Christmas by Agatha Christie

I read this November 2011
Why: as the February read for Waterstone's book club.
What I thought of it: Well,to pout my comments in context- I haven't read an Agatha Christie since I was a child. I don't really like detective novels and I don't watch the adaptations. I am however, very into Art Deco, so I would have welcomed lots of descriptive passages.
This is a short book and this was just as well. Full of he said she said, very stiff upper lip in style, there seem to be no 'setting in time or place'
Lots of characters not much suspense and a preposterous ending!
SPOILER ALERT
I had Stephen down as Harrys son not step brother. The PIlar Spanish story line was nonsense and the story of the killer was not much better
I give this a generous (I think) 5/10 just because it was short and easy to0 read.

The Gargoyle By Andrew Davidson

I read this: November 2011
Why: recommended by members of my Book Club at Waterstone's
What I thought: This is a great looking book t o start off with it has black edges, A strong dark cover.
I was expecting this book to be a fantasy book, but it's not. It is set across centuries and is a sort of perverse love story, but that wold be doing this book a disservice, it's much more than that. A porn start has a car accident which burns him so badly the doctors think he will not survive. The female character in the book, is a sculptress - yes you've guessed of gargoyles. It is an extraordinary diversity and I throughly enjoyed it.

Dark Matter By Michelle Paver

I read this November 2011
Why: Waterstone's book club read for December
what I thought of it: one word - Haunting
Michelle Paver has written children's books before. Tis one set against the backdrop of the high Arctic, 1930's just before WWII a haunting ghostly tale.
I liked the easy way it was written, without too much technical content just for the sake of adding it in. Human (and not so human) emotions - a scary presence on the ice.
The portrayals of the dogs were very similar to Call of the Wild.
I also liked the ending, very non traditional ghost story ending.
8/10
I would like to read more of Michelle's work and have got a copy of Oath Breaker to read

Call of the Wild By Jack London

I read this November 2011
Why: because it was a free download and something I have never got round to reading
This was the third book I've read as an e-book on my mobile phone. As I read several books at once this is a really easy way for me to read while I'm out and/or travelling.
what I thought: I wish I had read this book before, it is really good, compelling and really well constructed. Written as a story oif the dog, Buck and his adventures/journeys through his life. I really did enjoy this one
9/10
Have you read it? What did you think of it? What do you think of e-books, I love the medium, and I also love the feel, smell and look for paper books - I was a bookbinder at the British Museum and used to handle Illuminated manuscipts. I am used to handling beautiful books, but I do like the modern way of reading as well..

Matrimony by Joshua Henkin

I read this November 2011
Why: I bought this book in America when Borders was closing. Along with quite a few others which I leave in my condo for visitors.
A book about a writer (how many of those are there, in comparison to how many authors there are in the general population?) his time at college, his life and marriage.
A good holiday read, light and entertaining, some lovely passages and moves along apace.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I read this October 2011
Why : because I was going to see the film
What I thought:
I downloaded this onto my phone, and read it at every occasion I could. I started off quite enjoying it after all it is a good story and a Gothic genre novel so up my street, but I must say by about 1/3 of the way in I was struggling with it, I found it over wordy, boring and laborious. I had read it at school (many years ago) and I truly think the Brontes and other female authors of the 'classics' ws the main reason for me avoiding women authors for many years once I could pick my own reading material...too drab, homely, little girl lost , woe is me.

I thought I would enjy this but it was a drag.. shame

Come Next Spring by Elizabeth Graham

I read this in October 2011
Why: lent to me by Jayne this is another Mills & Boon for my research
Plot: Set in Canada on a ranch a rich older man,a virginal young innocent.
Sub plot of family intrigue and death of first wife. This was published in 1979 and I was surprised that really the main character traits seen here are still prevailing inb the Modern versions of M&B. The stories ar all linear, no real surprises, Never shocking and all had a happy ending, they really do have such a good idea of what their readers want.

3/10
Have you read this or are you a M&B fan? I woould love to hear form you.. I am in the process of writing a romance.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

I read this October 2011
Why: My next door neighbour's eldest granddaughter (Chantelle) is reading this for English Lit A level. I have read it before and am a Cormac McCarthy fan esp. No country for Old Men and when I heard I volunteered to re read The Road and chat it through with Chantelle as it's always good to hear what other people think of the books you've read and this one is particularity stylistic and enigmatic.
The Plot: A post ppocalypse world were a man and boy are forced onto the road in search of they no not what. It has no chapters, no mention of what happened, no beginning or end, just the relentelss need to survive. These people really are at the underneath of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
I enjoyed my first reading of this a few years ago when it first came out (it won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for fiction) but on second reading I found it had more of a spiritual side than I remembered. I really enjoyed this depressing, melancholy book and am glad to have re read it.

I would be interested to know who you think the people at the end are, I have my opinion but until Chantelle has read it and formed her own - I will keep it to myself.

Why: for Waterstone's book club
I was disappionted when this ws voted for our November read, but I must say I shoulkdn't have been. It is a real page turner. I like magical realism and strange books and this is strange. Peter Grant is a pliceman who starts off by seeing a ghost and many magical adventures lead on firm there.

The Reluctant Surrender by Penny Jordan

I read this book in September 2011
Another Mills and Boon.
There are similarities with the last one I read, heroine is a young virgin again and once again hit in by an older wealthy boss.
These are from the modern range and up to date.Maybe I'm looking too deeply into the morals of this!
Anyway it's interesting to mix uo my reading like this

The Forbidden Innocent by Sharion Kendrick

I read this in September 2011
Why : this is my First Mills & Boon, I am reading them because I want to have a go at writing one.

This is a reworking of Jane Eyre a modernism version, although not all that modern, the heroine is a virgin who goes to work for an author in his mansion. I found I was shocked that an updated version of any tale would still include a boss hitting on a vulnerable employee...
Easy read

So Much for That By Lionel Shriver

I read this in September 2011
Why: Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds Book Club read
This is from the author of We Have to Talk about Kevin. a book I have been struggling through for a while now, reading it in small (very small) doses. In a way I'm glad that this book was for Book Club as it made me read it through to the end. Had I not 'had to' I would have picked it up and put it down much the same as WHTTAK. I would say that LS is a very good writer, just I think not for me... The book is about a man who wants to retire and go off into what he calls the afterlife - life after work and money earning commitments a simple life elsewhere.
His wife has cancer and the central theme seemed to me to be how much the treatment cost! we have a lot to be thankful fr in the UK with our NHS
I usually like 'dark' books but this constant worry about bills was a bit wearing for my taste. There are also several sub plots which I think enlivened the book, but really I think it could have been shorter and maybe less involved.
I give it 5/10

Have you read it or any other of her novels?

I read this : August 2011
Why: I have previously read The Slave and loved it so when I saw this I couldn't resist.
This is part of the Penguin Modern Classics series a small book with 3 stories The Last Demon, very magical realism/religious. Yentl the Yeshiva Boy, which must be the basis for the film Yentl although I have not seen it - very good. The Cafeteria, a really enjoyable sad, remorseful, hopeful story. I loved all three - have you read any of these? Let me know what you think

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett

I read this in August 2011
It is the October book for Waterstones Book Club, Arc Bury St Edmunds

I must first say that I'm not much of a Bennett fan, I'm sure he's witty and charming in real life but his work comes across for me as a bit of a trying too hard to be humourous, grumpy old mannish.
This is a long short story or a short novel, shall we call it a novella? I don't know, I found it well written, but frankly unbelievable (and love magical realism!) and unentertaining... sorry to all the Bennett fans out there.
I also borrowed the spoken word CD which ran for 2 3/4 hours, at one stage I left it playing and went upstairs for a shower, that's how interesting it was.
But, when I started Book Club I decided come Hell or Highwater I would read the books, and I have if only so that I can vote
4/10 for me on this one.

Chilling, but I won't say thrilling.

notwithstanding by Louis de Bernieres

I read this book July 2011

I love LdB - I confess a bias. I have read loads of his work and never been disappointed. I think his whole style suits my reading preferences.

This is a collection of short stories that stand alone, yet are all centered around the events/people of the village of Notwithstanding. set at different times and using different genres. I really liked the idea of this way of bringing a collection together. I must say here that I have been working on a set of stories centered around a sheltered housing complex and had thought of this long before I read this. I am recording this to remind myself that I wasn't influenced...

Back to the book, entertaining, witty, sad, funny in turns.
A throughly good read as always with LdB

The Hare with Amber Eyes

I read this in July 2011
I read this as part of the Waterstone's Book Club. I think I may even have voted to read it!

How disappointing can a book be? This book reminded me of why I don't usually read biographies from choice. It was too 'listy' for my liking, it seemed , to me, to have long drawn out sections of uninteresting details and then to skim over the bits I would have wanted to read more on. Is this because a piece of non-fiction has to be that? I don't know, I just prefer writers to be able to 'fill in the gaps'
Strangely the cover also had an odd texture which I didn't like, sort of waxy.
Well enough said on this one, a potentially interesting book that I just could not get into.
Unfortunately a 2/10

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I read this in July 2011

This book was passed onto me by Julie and had it not been for that I would have completely missed out on reading this one as it really didn't appeal very much. What a treat I would have missed though. An episcopal novel (written as letters) it is a tale of the time when Guernsey was under german occupation in WWII. Many years ago I recall hearing that the children had been taken off the island and not returned for 5 years, but this novel really brought it home to me what that could be like. The hardships endured by the Islanders, the POWs and the Germans came to life. The story is lively, not overly sentimental and funny...how life goes one no matter what
I really enjoyed this quick, light read

All Quiet on the Western Front By Remarque

This World Book Night copy was passed onto me. I thought I had read tis when I was younger but the minute I started it I knew I hadn't. It's written from the point of view of a froup of young german schoolboys who sign on to fight in WWI. The descriptions and emotions are a joy to read even though the subject matter is so awful. These boys have nothing to go back to no school, no jobs, no wives or girlfriends. They are forced to grow up so quickly and so violently.

A must read

I read this book in May 2011

It has been on my books to read shelf for at least 12 months and I can't remember when, where or why I bought it. My guess it was in a sale, either at a collectables market or somewhere, as it has no store marks.

Anyhow let's leave that mystery unsolved shall we - the plot - a group of teenage girls are taken on an activities break after their exams and before end of term. Being teenage girls they are more interested in boys, absconding, smoking, drinking and their bodies. Full of teenage angst, do we ever grow out of it?

The 39 Steps

I read this
When: May 2011
From my 'to read' bookshelf.
I bought this book as part of a set called Penguin Essentials in a charity shop 10 books for £6 - a bargain!
After finishing the Long Song, I was looking around for something new and picked this up. I must admit to getting a bit confused as I though this was about fake drug smuggling in WWII, but I was getting mixed up with The Third Man I think.

Be that as it may, I enjoyed reading this one, short and to the piont, I like the turn of teh 20th century style. I usually read more modern books, but this spy novel was a real page turner, set just before the start of WWI
Throughly enjoyable,

Why:Book Club - Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds - Arc

I loved this book from the very start. I like the way the author talks directly to the reader.
A book set in Jamaica at the time of the abolition of slavery and all the turmoil around that.
The lives of the slaves and the plantation owners come across in a very human way, showing that whoever, wherever and whatever circumstances a person finds themselves in, we are all human, with hang ups, dreams, and prudences . Not over sentimental, nor overly gory or sensationalist.
From start to finish I found this one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time.

The Redbreast By Jo Nesbo

I read this
When: March 2011
Why:Book Club - Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds - Arc

As with Room (see post) I had been keen to read this as I had heard good reviews and it seemed really interesting.

I don't usually read detective/thrillers but you'll probably see from my blog that I read a wide variety of genres and like to mix up my reading styles, so when this was suggested at Waterstone's Book Club I raised my hand to vote for it.

it's quite a long book (600 pages) but a lot of crime writing is and I wasn't put off.  I took a long time (I would say a good 1/3rd of the book) to really get into it.  I preferred the narrative of the present day as I found the WWII parts a bit long winded, but hey this is a thriller they probably needed to be...
Set in Norway, the names are confusing and I had to consult the map several times to find where they plot physically was going... I read the Millennium Trilogy - you know the Girl with etc.... in much the same way.

In the end I found the plot a little far fetched for me...

But a good page turner none the less

Room By Emma Donoghue

read this
When: March 2011
Why:Book Club - Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds - Arc

I had been keen to read this book as it had received good reviews and it seemed really interesting.

I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but then again I won't go out of my way to recommend it.
The story of a kidnapped girl and her son  who was born in captivity really appealed to me, as did the fact it was written from the 5 year old boy's point of view, but that soon lots it's appeal and I found it a bit wearing to read constantly form this view.  At times he seemed too childlike and at others too grown up.
I did like the way though that the book was sectioned and definite things happened in each and there wasn't any over glamorisation of the consequences to Mother and Child once out of the room, e.g the expenses they would have to incur as a result of an unlawful act by another, the long term psychological affects etc.
Have a go I wouldn't want to put anyone off reading this, but I was somehow a bit disappointed.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie By Muriel Spark

I read this in March 2011
I picked up a copy for myself at Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds on World Book Night.
I had not read this book before but remember seeing the film when I was young.  This book struck many resonances with me as although I was born in the 50's and this book is set in the 30's, it seems to me that by the time I reached the age of the Brodie Set, things had not changed much in Britain.
Like Miss Brodie in the 30's many women were single as a consequence of so many young men dieing in the War.
Young girls of an impressionable age latch onto role models wherever they find them, is Miss Brodie so different then to the  celebrities young girls idolize today.  The big difference for me is that Jean Brodie knew exactly what she was doing and was preparing the girls to somehow take on the world in ways she would have done herself if only given the chance.   The bitter ironic twist of betrayal gives this book, for me, it's cutting edge.
I really enjoyed reading this small, but perfectly formed book.
Let me know if you enjoyed it to
I am going on a train journey to Bath and will give the book away there.

M/F By Anthony Burgess

read thisWhen: March 2011

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I read this
When: February 2011 ( for the second time)
Why:Re Read as I am giving away 48 copies on World Book Night
Plot:The human side of the Biafrian War
What I thought: I love the way this book just tells the human story of war, the characters do things without them appearing to be heroic.  The book shows that normal human emotions, conflicts, likes, dislikes, wants and needs are the same in times of peace and war.  A moving story.

World Book Night 2011

Welcome to my bookshelf!
This is my blog for comments on books I am reading, books I have read, books I would like to read and books I hope to write, in fact everything books!

I was lucky enough to be one of the people chosen to participate in the first World Book Night.  I will be collecting 48 copies of Half of  a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie from Waterstone's Bookstore at the Arc in Bury St Edmunds on 5 March 2011.  I chose this book from the 25 titles because I first read it on recommendation from a friend in Cambridge who had been recommended it by a relative in Denmark.  I would like to see just how far these 48 books can travel.  In the spirit of reading and sharing good books I will be giving the books away in various ways.  I would like everyone who receives a copy and reads it to share their thoughts about the book on this blog and to pass it on http://myworldbooknight.blogspot.com
