Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

I read this September 2011
Why: for Waterstone's book club
I was disappionted when this ws voted for our November read, but I must say I shoulkdn't have been. It is a real page turner. I like magical realism and strange books and this is strange. Peter Grant is a pliceman who starts off by seeing a ghost and many magical adventures lead on firm there.
I really enjoyed it.
I give this book
8/10

Have read it? what did you think of it?

The Reluctant Surrender by Penny Jordan

I read this book in September 2011
Another Mills and Boon.
There are similarities with the last one I read, heroine is a young virgin again and once again hit in by an older wealthy boss.
These are from the modern range and up to date.Maybe I'm looking too deeply into the morals of this!
Anyway it's interesting to mix uo my reading like this
I give this one
4/10
Are you a M&B fan? what do you like about them?

The Forbidden Innocent by Sharion Kendrick

I read this in September 2011
Why : this is my First Mills & Boon, I am reading them because I want to have a go at writing one.

This is a reworking of Jane Eyre a modernism version, although not all that modern, the heroine is a virgin who goes to work for an author in his mansion. I found I was shocked that an updated version of any tale would still include a boss hitting on a vulnerable employee...
Easy read

are you a M&B fan - let me know what you like about them.
I give this book 4/10

So Much for That By Lionel Shriver

I read this in September 2011
Why: Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds Book Club read
This is from the author of We Have to Talk about Kevin. a book I have been struggling through for a while now, reading it in small (very small) doses. In a way I'm glad that this book was for Book Club as it made me read it through to the end. Had I not 'had to' I would have picked it up and put it down much the same as WHTTAK. I would say that LS is a very good writer, just I think not for me... The book is about a man who wants to retire and go off into what he calls the afterlife - life after work and money earning commitments a simple life elsewhere.
His wife has cancer and the central theme seemed to me to be how much the treatment cost! we have a lot to be thankful fr in the UK with our NHS
I usually like 'dark' books but this constant worry about bills was a bit wearing for my taste. There are also several sub plots which I think enlivened the book, but really I think it could have been shorter and maybe less involved.
I give it 5/10

Have you read it or any other of her novels?
hat dide you think
