I read this
When: May 2011
Why:Book Club - Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds - Arc
I loved this book from the very start. I like the way the author talks directly to the reader.
A book set in Jamaica at the time of the abolition of slavery and all the turmoil around that.
The lives of the slaves and the plantation owners come across in a very human way, showing that whoever, wherever and whatever circumstances a person finds themselves in, we are all human, with hang ups, dreams, and prudences . Not over sentimental, nor overly gory or sensationalist.
From start to finish I found this one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time.
10/10
