I read this in September 2011
Why: Waterstone's Bury St Edmunds Book Club read
This is from the author of We Have to Talk about Kevin. a book I have been struggling through for a while now, reading it in small (very small) doses. In a way I'm glad that this book was for Book Club as it made me read it through to the end. Had I not 'had to' I would have picked it up and put it down much the same as WHTTAK. I would say that LS is a very good writer, just I think not for me... The book is about a man who wants to retire and go off into what he calls the afterlife - life after work and money earning commitments a simple life elsewhere.
His wife has cancer and the central theme seemed to me to be how much the treatment cost! we have a lot to be thankful fr in the UK with our NHS
I usually like 'dark' books but this constant worry about bills was a bit wearing for my taste. There are also several sub plots which I think enlivened the book, but really I think it could have been shorter and maybe less involved.
I give it 5/10
Have you read it or any other of her novels?
hat dide you think
Do let me know
