I read this October 2011
Why: My next door neighbour's eldest granddaughter (Chantelle) is reading this for English Lit A level. I have read it before and am a Cormac McCarthy fan esp. No country for Old Men and when I heard I volunteered to re read The Road and chat it through with Chantelle as it's always good to hear what other people think of the books you've read and this one is particularity stylistic and enigmatic.
The Plot: A post ppocalypse world were a man and boy are forced onto the road in search of they no not what. It has no chapters, no mention of what happened, no beginning or end, just the relentelss need to survive. These people really are at the underneath of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
I enjoyed my first reading of this a few years ago when it first came out (it won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for fiction) but on second reading I found it had more of a spiritual side than I remembered. I really enjoyed this depressing, melancholy book and am glad to have re read it.
I would be interested to know who you think the people at the end are, I have my opinion but until Chantelle has read it and formed her own - I will keep it to myself.
Have you read this book? did you like it? tell me what you thought of it
9.5/10
